Welcome!

The I-Day Expo and Market, held on 1 December at the Albert Hall, was a resounding success, enjoyed by hundreds of Canberrans, 78 stallholders, live bands, school choirs, dancers and other entertainers.  It was a fantastic celebration of the 2012 International Day of People with Disability – a community event to be justly proud of.

A beautiful summer’s day, the iconic Canberra setting, and assistance from over 45 volunteers on the day, allowed everyone to fully participate in this celebration.  Participants were impressed by the wide array of quality, hand made goods – works of art, craft items, unique gifts made from silk, ceramics, wood, clay and beads, plants, designer printed T-shirts, Christmas decorations, cards and stationery – too many beautiful items to list.

There was a special message from the Prime Minister (see here…), new skills to learn (eg. pottery, beading, yoga, belly dancing), numerous sports to try or watch (eg. boccia, cricket, wheelchair basketball, table tennis, football, soccer), bands to enjoy (Rudely Interrupted, Young Music Society, Lyneham High Jazz Band), other entertainers (Adam & Geoff, Declan Sykes, Dream Team, Count Us In Choir) and children’s activities (badge making, jumping castle, balloon modeling).

Many were glad of the opportunity to sit quietly and chat over a cuppa and cake, or ask those important questions about the National Disability Insurance Scheme and other programs that support people with disability and their families. Others wanted to check out the fire engines, have their portrait drawn on the spot, or just talk to Spiderman or the LJ Hooker mascot!

The Expo and Market provided something for everyone.  Check out the photos here.

Special thanks to the small, hard working committee whose members were drawn from the ACT Community Living Project and Disability ACT. Without your persistence and drive the Expo and Market would not have been the success it was.
